The truth about wood burning stoves and the Eco 22 Directive

Over the past years there have been many rumours in the press about banning wood burners. This is not true. Most people in the UK take their responsibilities to the environment seriously these days, and to reflect this The Eco 22 directive has been brought in. This covers the levels of particulate matter that can be expelled into the atmosphere and Eco 22 ready stoves are well within these guidelines. From 2022 it will be illegal to sell stoves that do not meet these specifications, and this explains the sensational headlines found in the newspapers and online. Eco 22 ready stoves have been available since 2015 and Ashtead Fireplaces offer a comprehensive range to suit all tastes. Visit the showroom today to find out more.

A question we are commonly asked in the showroom is: are they banning the burning of wood? Again, the answer is no. They are banning the sale of wet wood from February 2021 unless purchased in quantities greater than 2 cubic metres. The government want wood to be burnt in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way and this is covered by the previously mentioned Eco 22 directives. There is no method for historic installations to be forcibly removed from people’s houses. The older stoves will gradually be replaced with new technology in an organic fashion.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WHEN USING A STOVE IS WET WOOD. ENSURE YOUR WOOD HAS A WATER CONTENT OF LESS THAN 20%. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE SMOKE, BLACKENING OF THE GLASS, LACK OF HEAT, SMOKE LEAKING INTO THE ROOM, EXCESSIVE AIR POLLUTION OR FAILURE TO LIGHT THE STOVE.
